Hermit Thrush
(Adopted 1941)

The Hermit Thrush, the divine songster of the cool forests of the North and the higher mountains, can be distinguished from the other thrushes by its rusty tail. Its song is clear, ethereal, and flutelike; 3 or 4 phrases at different pitches with a long pause between each phrase. At the approach of winter the Hermit deserts the forests where it nests for the southern states and is the only one of the brown thrushes likely to be found within the U.S. at that season.
