Zebra Swallowtail
(Adopted 1994)

With its long tails fluttering behind it like streamers, this black-striped, greenish wite butterfly prefers flat forested areas near rivers or swamps. It is limited to the eastern half of the U.S. and is occasionally found in southern Ontario. Its caterpillars eat leaves of young pawpaw plants. Adults have short tongues but are fond of such flowers as water-willow, dogbane, and blackberry.
