Oregon Swallowtail
(Adopted 1979)

This family contains the world's largest and most gorgeous butterflies. Most adult swallowtails prefer open country, but a few favor woodland trails and margins. Most swallowtail larvae are colorfully marked. These caterpillars feed on leaves of a wide variety of trees and nonwoody plants, and some are pests. Swallowtails range throughout North America, except for the highest reaches of the Arctic. Most species occur in the South and West.
