Mourning Cloak
(Adopted 2001)

This familiar butterfly can be identified by its purplish black wings with their broad yellow border edged inwardly with tiny bright blue spots. The normal habitat of this butterfly is in woodland openings along streams, but they move around so much that they may be seen almost anywhere. In the fall, many Mourning Cloaks migrate south, but others overwinter in the north. Mourning Cloaks usually feed at sap flows, but occasionally visit flowers for nectar.
