Common Loon
(Adopted 1961)

This avian submarine, identified by its longish profile, checkerboard pattern, and daggerlike bill, spends the summer on forested lakes of Canada and the "golden ponds" of our border states, where its yodeling cries lend mystery to the night. In winter on salt water of both coasts its checkerboard pattern is replaced by gray.
