Baltimore Oriole
(Adopted 1947)

Of the 7 orioles normally found in the U.S., the Northern Oriole is the best known. The eastern form, widespread east of the plains, is known as the "Baltimore" Oriole and is recognized by its flame-orange and black pattern and black head. Its piping whistles accompany the days of early summer. Females are dull greenish above, yellowish below. The purse-like nest is suspended from a branch tip, often overhanging a city street.
