Baltimore Checkerspot
(Adopted 1973)

Identify this black butterfly by its narrow red-brown border and many pale cream-white spots. It has the typical checkerspot pattern below. You can find it in marshes, along streams, or on dry hillsides. It is found through much of the eastern U.S. and southern Canada. Adults visit flowers infrequently.
