Brown Pelican
(Adopted 1966)

Pelicans are huge robust waterbirds with long flat bills and great throat pouches. Of the 6 species in the world, 2 live in North America. This species, the Brown Pelican, is confined to salt water along our southern coasts, where it is well known to every tourist. These ponderous birds fly in orderly lines low over the water and often perch on the pilings of fishing wharfs.
