Viceroy
(Adopted 1990)

This mimic of the Monarch is orange, but has a thin black stripe across each wing and a single row of small white dashes in the black wing borders. Viceroys are found in open areas along streams or marshes. You can find them in much of the U.S. and southern Canada, except for the Pacific coast. Look for Viceroys from late spring to fall. Adults feed on animal dropings and sap flows but also visit flowers. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of willows and poplars.
