Zebra Longwing
(Adopted 1996)

The Zebra is easily identified by its long black wings with this yellow stripes. It usually flies very slowly, with shallow wing beats. Zebras belong to a tropical group that has the unusual habit of collecting and feeding on pollen from flowers. Its preferred habitat is the understory of dense tropical or subtropical woodlands and hammocks. This butterfly is resident in southern Florida and south Texas, and occasionally appears in southeastern Arizona and elsewhere north of its normal range. the butterflies are found year round in their permanent habitats. You can find adults nectaring and collecting pollen at lantana and composites such as shepherd's needle.
