California Dog Face

A poodle head outline on the pointed forewing distinguishes this large yellow butterfly, although the female's dog face is faint. This is a tropical butterfly that resides in out southern states. Occasionally , it wanders north to form temporary populations. It is found in open, scrubby fields and the edges of woodlands. Its caterpillars eat the leaves of legumes such as wild indigo, leadplant, and prarie clovers. Its close relative is the California Dog Face.
