Bowhead Whale
(Adopted 1983)
Replaces the Right Whale in cold arctic seas from western Alaska through northern Canada to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Usually found near the edge of a polar ice field. The huge head has a bowed lower jaw, which is mostly white. Bowheads remain in arctic waters year 'round and are able to break through ice several feet thick.
