Yellowhammer
(Adopted 1927)

When this large, brown-backed woodpecker flies, it shows a conspicuous white rump and a black crescent across its chest. We often see this bird on the ground, where it eats ants. Flickers are found almost continentwide except in treeless country. They come in two basic forms: Yellow-shafted (East), with yellow linings under the wings and tail; and Red-shafted (West), with salmon-red linings. Where the two forms meet on the Great Plains they hybridize.
