Tarpon
(Adopted 1955)

Although the Tarpon looks like a gigantic herring, it is more closely related to the eels! (Both the Tarpon and the eels have larval young that look like long, translucent leaves.) The Tarpon is silvery, with extremely large scales and a long filament at the rear of its dorsal fin. Due to its sensational fighting and leaping ability, the Tarpon is one of the most highly prized sport fishes from North Carolina to Brazil.
